DON’T LAUGH FOR FEAR OF OPENING YOUR LIPS AND RECEIVING THE BAD AIR
Hello Thursday,
I don’t know about you, but this week has zoomed by for Dan and I! Its been a year now, since we moved back to the states, and we are still getting used to the different obstacles dealing with everyday situations.
Yesterday for example, I had doctor’s orders to have lab work; however, it was going to be self-pay. Not thinking this would be a problem I made an appointment with a walk-in lab, so I could get in and out quickly. Not, I was waiting for 30 minutes; until someone came out and told me that I would have to order on-line.
Went home and Dan applied on line for all the tests that was on the piece of paper the doctor gave me, paid and then when it was ready to print the order out!!!! No ink in the printer. Guess what, Dan was on the phone to order some ink which is going to cause a delay in my labs. Just another Wednesday, yes – glad its Thursday!! Friday just called – she’ll be here tomorrow, and she’s bringing the wine. By then, Dan and I will need some wine.
Today, I’m going to be blogging on the first of substances that causes air pollution; hydrocarbons. The planet's atmosphere and climate have been changing for decades, and hydrocarbons are one of main culprits. These are a class of compounds primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen. As major components of oil, natural gas and pesticides, these substances contribute to the greenhouse effect and climate change, deplete the ozone, reduce photosynthetic ability of plants, and increase occurrences of cancer and respiratory disorders in humans.
Methane and chlorofluorocarbons are two hydrocarbons that can drastically alter the atmosphere. Methane oxidizes into carbon dioxide (CO2), increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and adding to the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Chlorofluorocarbons are used in refrigeration and aerosol cans. When they're released into the atmosphere, they produce chlorine and reduce the ozone layer, which protects the earth from ultraviolet radiation. Because of this, humans, animals and plants are more exposed to harmful UV rays.
Aldehydes are toxic chemicals that result from the combustion of hydrocarbons, such as burning car fuel and plywood. They've been shown to inhibit photosynthesis in plants, cause eye and lung irritations, and even possibly cause cancer.
Alkyl nitrates are products of hydrocarbons that chemically react with molecules in the atmosphere. They can chemically react again to produce nitrous oxide, which can affect blood vessels, the liver, the kidneys and the nervous system.
Aromatic hydrocarbons come from the combustion of coal, oil, tar and plant material. Benzene is a common hydrocarbon used as a solvent and in fuel. It's been found to deplete red blood cells, cause cancer in mammals and damage bone marrow.
Polynuclear aromatic compounds are hydrocarbons with two or more benzene molecules. They've been shown to cause cancer also.
Massive oil spills are an obvious source of damage to human health and ecosystems. Exposure to large amounts of oil may inhibit respiratory function in animals and humans. Animals that ingest the oil can also be poisoned.
Oil is not only detrimental in large spills; small emissions from automotive leaks and other sources can have cumulative effects that can damage the environment in devastating ways.

So, what can be done? One way is everyone could go and trade their existing vehicles in for electric or hybrid vehicles, but that’s probably not a very workable solution. A simple solution is to improve the combustion of hydrocarbon-based gasoline and diesel fuels. How do you do that? Well, a few factors are key: First you should ensure you keep your engine clean and tune up your car regularly.
Built-up and unburned fuel can clog your engine and hinder future combustion.
Second you should use a proven fuel additive that will help un-bundle the hydrocarbon molecules, allowing oxygen easier access and thus producing a more complete burn.
I know this isn’t the end-all solution, but steps like this are something each person and/or company can do in order to ensure the vehicle(s) they are driving burn the hydrocarbons more completely. Doing so will lower the volume of harmful emissions being produced and clean up the air we breathe.

As I research about pollution, it didn’t dawn on me exactly what it all contained. It is overwhelming and in fact very scary how it is all related to our health and why it contributes to our bodies. This is why, I’m blogging and if I can help just one person to realize this, I’m doing my job. This is my passion and hope it is helping you to have an open mind.

My topic Friday will continue on air pollution and I will focus on the second of substances that causes air pollution; organic compounds. Organic compounds contain hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, and often times other elements. I’ll discuss why the burning of these compounds causes pollution and steps that can be taken to prevent this pollution.
